Congratulations on choosing Maui—easily one of the most romantic and breathtaking Hawaiian islands! Whether you’re planning a honeymoon, a getaway, or an adventure-packed vacation, Maui offers an unforgettable experience.
As someone used to driving 5–8 hours just to reach the next major city, I was absolutely amazed by how compact yet diverse this island is. Imagine going from the lush north coast to the sunny south shore in just 30 minutes! But don’t let its size fool you—Maui is bursting with things to do, see, and explore.
For this itinerary, a rental car is non-negotiable. Trust me, you’ll want the freedom to chase sunsets, waterfalls, and hidden beaches. I also recommend splitting your stay between two locations to make the most of your time. We opted for 3 nights in Hana on the island’s lush east side and 2 nights in Kihei on the sunny south shore.
In just 6 magical days, we managed to explore nearly every corner of the island—and now I’m here to share all the tips, tricks, and can’t-miss spots to help you do the same. Ready to dive into paradise? Let’s go!
Quick View: 6-Day Maui Adventure Itinerary
Day 1 – Road to Hana: The Journey Begins
- I recently tried the Shaka Audio Guide’s Road to Hana tour, which was a great addition to our trip. For $22.99, this audio guide was incredibly helpful, directing us to key sights, the best parking spots, and even the most convenient bathroom stops. Between the informative segments, we enjoyed delightful Hawaiian music. On our way back, the app shifted to sharing engaging stories about Maui’s history. This purchase truly enhanced our experience and was well worth the cost.
- Kick off your trip with one of the most scenic drives in the world! Wind through lush rainforests, cascading waterfalls, and breathtaking coastal views as you start your Hana adventure.

Day 2 – Waiʻanapanapa State Park & Lava Tubes
- Explore the iconic black sand beach at Waiʻanapanapa State Park.
- Discover hidden lava tubes and soak in the dramatic volcanic landscapes.
Day 3 – Waterfalls, Pools, and Trails
- Visit Wailua Falls, one of Maui’s most picturesque waterfalls.
- Take a dip in the Venus Pools—a local favorite for swimming and cliff-jumping.
- Hike the Pipiwai Trail through a bamboo forest to the stunning Waimoku Falls.
Day 4 – Travel to Kihei & Haleakalā Sunset
- Head to the sunny south shore in Kihei.
- Cap off the day with a bucket-list experience—watching the sunset from the summit of Haleakalā National Park.
Day 5 – Beach Day in Kihei
- Relax, recharge, and soak up the sun on Kihei’s golden beaches.
- Snorkel, paddleboard, or simply enjoy the laid-back vibes.
Day 6 – Lahaina & Departure
- Stroll through historic Lahaina Town for shopping, art galleries, and delicious eats.
- Say goodbye to paradise and head home with memories to last a lifetime.
Day 1 – Start the Legendary Road to Hana
Many visitors try to tackle the entire Road to Hana in a single day—and let me tell you, that’s a huge mistake. Rushing through this journey means missing out on its magic. You’ll end up exhausted, frustrated by traffic, and competing for parking at every stop. Instead, slow down, savor the adventure, and make it an experience to remember.
We started our journey around 11 AM after landing, grabbing our rental car, and stocking up on snacks and essentials. By heading out later, we avoided the morning rush and enjoyed far less traffic. This gave us the freedom to pull over wherever we wanted—no circling for parking spots at popular stops!
We rolled into Hana just before 4 PM, leaving us plenty of time to visit the town’s general store before it closed at 5 PM to grab last-minute supplies.
Where We Stayed: The Bamboo Inn
For our Hana base, we stayed at the Bamboo Inn, and it was absolutely perfect. The property, owned by John, is a peaceful retreat with stunning ocean views from every room. Plus, John lives on-site, so if you need anything, he’s there to help. We stayed in the ‘Iwa Suit, and had a spectacular view, no blinds on the windows, but you didn’t need any! John provided breakfast every morning.
Pro Tip: Like many spots in Hawaii, the Bamboo Inn doesn’t have AC, but keeping the windows open during the day lets the island breeze flow through—nature’s air conditioning!

Day 2 – Exploring Hana and Beyond
Stop 1 – Waiʻanapanapa State Park (7:00–10:00 AM)
We kicked off our second day with a visit to the stunning Waiʻanapanapa State Park—home to the iconic black sand beach. With advanced reservations for the 7:00–10:00 AM slot ($10 per car), we skipped the midday crowds and had the beach, sea caves, and lava rock formations practically to ourselves.
Pro Tip: This park is one of the most popular stops along the Road to Hana, so plan ahead—reservations are required and often sell out!
Stop 2 – Hana Lava Tubes (Late Morning)
Next, we checked out the Hana Lava Tubes, just a short drive away. This self-guided cave walk was a fun little detour, offering a glimpse into Maui’s volcanic history.
- Cost: $15 per person.
- Worth it? It’s not a “must-see,” but it’s a unique experience if you’re curious about lava formations and enjoy exploring caves.
Stop 3 – Lunch at Local Food Trucks (11:00 AM–1:00 PM)
Hana’s food scene is made up of family-owned food trucks and stands—a charming part of the town’s laid-back vibe. Most trucks open around 11 AM (if they open at all) and sell out quickly, especially on weekends. By 2 PM, many spots are already out of food!
Pro Tip: Don’t wait until dinner to grab something—get extra snacks or meals for later since options after 5 PM are limited.
Stop 4 – Relax at Hana’s Beaches (Afternoon)
Spend the afternoon soaking up the sun and enjoying the tranquility of Hana’s lesser-known beaches. Some favorites include:
- Hamoa Beach – A crescent-shaped beauty perfect for swimming and body surfing.
- Koki Beach – Great for photos with red-hued cliffs as the backdrop.
- Hana Bay Beach Park – Calm waters for a relaxing dip.
Stop 5 – Dinner (Before 5:30 PM)
Dinner in Hana takes a bit of planning since food options dwindle after 5 PM. Get back to town before 5:30 PM to explore these choices:
- Food Trucks – About 3–4 trucks stay open until 7 PM, but supplies may run out early.
- Hana Ranch Restaurant – The only sit-down restaurant in town, open until 9 PM. It’s pricier, but a reliable backup if trucks sell out.
Stop 6 – Sunset Stroll by the Ocean
Wrap up the day with a peaceful walk through town or along the shoreline to soak in Hana’s natural beauty and slower pace. It’s the perfect way to wind down after a day of exploration.

Day 3 – Exploring Beyond Hana: Waterfalls, Pools, and Trails
Stop 1 – Haleakalā National Park (Morning)
Start your day early with a trip 30 minutes past Hana to Haleakalā National Park (Kīpahulu District)—the official turnaround point for most Road to Hana travelers.
- Must-Do Hike: The Pipiwai Trail, a 4-mile out-and-back hike through a magical bamboo forest, leads to the breathtaking Waimoku Falls (400 feet tall!).
- Pro Tip: Arrive in the morning to avoid crowds and make the most of the cooler temperatures. By midday, the park fills up with day-trippers and parking gets tight.
Stop 2 – Wailua Falls (Midday)
After your hike, cool off at Wailua Falls, one of Maui’s most picturesque waterfalls. Located right off the road, it’s incredibly easy to access.
- Bonus Tip: Bring your swimsuit! The pool at the base of the falls is perfect for a quick, refreshing dip.
Stop 3 – Venus Pools (Afternoon)
This hidden gem is an absolute must for those seeking something a little off the beaten path. The Venus Pools are saltwater swimming holes surrounded by lava rocks, making them ideal for floating and cliff-jumping. You can find it in Google Maps, and you will find other cars parked on the side of the road.
- Getting There: You’ll cross private land to reach the pools, but don’t worry—the owners allow respectful visitors to pass through.
- Pro Tip: Pack water shoes for easier access and extra grip on the rocks.
Stop 4 – Beach Break (Optional)
If you’re not ready to call it a day, head back to one of Hana’s beautiful beaches (like Hamoa Beach) for some late-afternoon relaxation. Or, simply linger at the Venus Pools and soak up the peaceful vibes.
Stop 5 – Dinner in Hana (Before 5:30 PM)
Wrap up the day with dinner back in town. As always, plan ahead since most food trucks close early. If you’re craving something more formal, Hana Ranch Restaurant is open until 9 PM for a sit-down meal.
Wailua Falls

Day 4 – Scenic Drive, Charming Paia, and Haleakalā Sunset
Morning – Farewell to Hana (9:00 AM)
We said goodbye to Hana around 9:00 AM, once again cruising against the traffic heading into town. The drive back felt just as magical as the first time, with lush greenery and dramatic coastal views keeping us mesmerized the entire way.
Midday – Lunch and Exploring Paia
By midday, we arrived in Paia—a vibrant surf town with a bohemian vibe. Flatbread Company was our top pick for lunch, serving up delicious, wood-fired pizzas in a casual, laid-back atmosphere.
Since we skipped Paia on the way in, we took some extra time to wander its boutique shops, art galleries, and cafes before hitting the road again. It’s the perfect spot for souvenirs and a quick caffeine fix!
Afternoon – Arriving in Kihei
After lunch, we checked into our Airbnb in Kihei, just a 30-minute drive south. Kihei welcomed us with sunny skies, sandy beaches, and a relaxed vibe—the perfect setting for the next leg of our adventure.
Evening – Sunset and Stargazing at Haleakalā
Instead of braving the 3:00 AM wake-up call for Haleakalā’s famous sunrise, we opted for the sunset—and it turned out to be one of the most memorable moments of our trip.
Why Choose Sunset?
- Warmer temperatures compared to chilly mornings.
- No reservations required—just show up and enjoy.
- Fewer crowds, making it easier to relax and take in the views.
- Bonus: Stargazing! After sunset, we lingered for about an hour and were rewarded with an unforgettable night sky full of stars.
The Drive Back: While the return trip in the dark might sound intimidating, the well-marked, 2-lane road with guardrails made it manageable and safe.
Pro Tips for Haleakalā
- Bathrooms: Convenient 24-hour restrooms are located at the visitor center and the summit—perfect for late-night visits.
- Warm Layers: Bring jackets, hats, and even blankets—the temperature drops dramatically at higher elevations.
- Snacks and Water: There’s nowhere to buy food or drinks at the summit, so come prepared.
Haleakala at Sunset

Day 5 – Beach Bliss in Kihei
After days of adventure and exploration, Day 5 was all about relaxation and soaking up the sun in Kihei—the perfect way to unwind before wrapping up the trip.
Morning – Coffee with a View
We started the day slow and easy with a coffee stop at Da Green Coffee Bar—our absolute favorite spot for a morning pick-me-up. With smooth espresso, refreshing cold brews, and locally sourced ingredients, it was the perfect way to ease into the day.
Midday – Beach Time!
Kihei is home to some of Maui’s most beautiful beaches, so we packed our towels, sunscreen, and snorkel gear for a full day by the water.
Top Beach Picks in Kihei:
- Kamaole Beach Parks (I, II, III): Great for swimming, snorkeling, and sunset views.
- Keawakapu Beach: Perfect for long walks and fewer crowds.
- Makena Beach (Big Beach): A little farther out but worth the trip for its golden sand and turquoise waters.
Afternoon – Shave Ice Treats
No trip to Maui is complete without trying shave ice, and Kihei has stands everywhere! We couldn’t resist sampling a few flavors—lilikoi (passionfruit) and guava were instant favorites.
Evening – Sunset Stroll
We wrapped up the day with a sunset walk along the beach, watching the sky light up in shades of pink, orange, and gold—an absolutely magical way to end a laid-back day.
Pro Tips for Your Kihei Beach Day:
- Early Start: Arrive early to grab a prime beach spot before it gets crowded.
- Beach Gear: Many rental shops offer snorkel sets, beach chairs, and umbrellas if you need them.
- Stay Hydrated: Bring plenty of water and snacks for a full day under the sun.
- Sunscreen: Opt for reef-safe sunscreen to help protect Maui’s beautiful coral reefs.

Final Day – Exploring Lahaina: A Historic Town on the West Side
Since we had a 10 PM flight and needed to check out of our Airbnb by 11 AM, we decided to spend our last day exploring Lahaina, a charming historic town on the west side of Maui.
Lahaina’s Historic Charm
Lahaina is a delightful town filled with shops, restaurants, and art galleries—perfect for a leisurely half-day exploration. We strolled down Front Street, which is lined with unique boutiques, inviting eateries, and local art galleries. It was a great way to enjoy our final moments on the island while keeping our car packed with luggage.
Important Note: Due to the Maui fires of 2023, Lahaina may still be undergoing construction and recovery. Some areas may be closed or still under restoration, so be sure to check current conditions before planning your visit.
How Much Time?
A half-day was the perfect amount of time for us, but if you’re into art, history, or shopping, you could easily spend a full day here. For those with a more relaxed beach schedule, it could even be combined with a morning at the beach before heading back to the airport.
Let me know if you’d like to add or adjust anything else!

Final Thoughts – A Full Island Adventure
Over the course of our 5 days on Maui, we explored the east, west, south, and north shores of the island. We made it a point to step off the beaten path and experience areas outside of the typical tourist spots, which gave us a much more authentic island feel. From the quiet, serene beaches to the charming small towns, we found that spending time away from the crowds allowed us to truly connect with the island’s natural beauty and culture.
Whether you’re seeking adventure or relaxation, Maui has something for everyone. And for us, the mix of exploring both popular attractions and hidden gems made the trip even more memorable.
